Dear Nessacus Families,

Today, September 24, 2019 the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education released School Accountability Data.  I am very happy to announce that Nessacus made progress in all areas and exceeded most of our targets this year! This means that we are no longer requiring assistance or intervention from the MA Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. I appreciate all the hard work that was done this past year by the staff at Nessacus. Together, we are committed to the continued work involving improved instruction and learning at Nessacus.  Thank you to our larger school community for your continued support for the work we do!

It is hard to believe, but we are already ½ way through the first marking term!  Please check your children’s Powerschool and review their grades with them. If you have any questions, you can contact your children’s teachers.

The 6th grade report card is still standards based, meaning students are assessed on their progress towards the standard rather than averaging assignment grades.  When checking Powerschool, you have to click on the standards tab in order to see what the report card will look like. 6th grade reading and writing standards are based on what the students should be able to do at the end of 6th grade.  Therefore, if a child is receiving a 1 or 2 that means that they are making progress towards the standard and could get to a 3 (meeting the standard) by the end of the school year!

Math and Science also gives a “grade” for certain things that will be reported on Powerschool but will not show up on the report card.  The other subjects are not using this feature so it will report out a 0% - that is not their grade - just indicates that the teacher is not using the function.  Only Math and Science are currently using this and it is purely for parents to see how their child is doing in certain areas that are not reported out on the report card.

Art classes in grades 6 and 8 have just finished a project and Ms. Scholz will be uploading grades this week.  If there is not a grade yet, please check back next week.

We had our first round of sign ups for the clubs on Monday and will have another day this week during lunch.  Clubs will begin next week. Students will get confirmation of clubs by Friday..

The after school clubs are being offered this fall from September 30-Dec 20  from 2:45-3:25. A late bus will be provided for students to get transportation home.  The fall clubs are as follows:

Monday - Student Council and Intramural sports

Tuesday - Newspaper, Yearbook, Arts and Crafts, Goecaching, and Best Buddies (will be the first Tuesday of the month all year long)

Thursday - Intramurals, sewing club and Girls Who Code.

Spring clubs will run from February 1- Mid May from 2:45-3:25.  A late bus will be provided for students to get transportation home.  The winter/spring clubs are as follows:

Monday - Jazz Band, Student Council, Intramural Sports

Tuesday - Newspaper, Yearbook, Arts and Crafts, Best Buddies (1st Tuesday of the month)

Wednesday - Movie Making Club, Gaming/Esports

Thursday - Intramural Sports, Physics club

In January we will be doing a musical production in the drama club.  Practices will be daily and will run from 2:45-5:30 or 6:00. No bus will be provided so parents will have to pick their child up at Nessacus at the end of practice.  Students will perform the musical at the end of the month in the evening.

Students will be receiving a pamphlet with information on signing up.  There is no cost to the students! We are very excited about this new endeavor and hope to get a good response.  Clubs will need 8 students signed up in order to run the club.
